What is Miopin Eye Drops?
Miopin eye drops are ophthalmic solution designed to improve the eye's accommodation function, containing neostigmine methyl sulfate as the active ingredient.
It is manufactured and sold by Santen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and has been on the market since October 1967.
Ingredients
Each 1 mL contains the following components:
- Neostigmine methyl sulfate 0.05 mg
- Calcium chloride hydrate 0.3 mg
- Sodium chloride 6.5 mg
- Sodium bicarbonate 0.03 mg
- L-aspartate potassium 3.5 mg
Main Indications
・Improvement of accommodation function
Accommodation function refers to the eye's ability to focus. When this function declines, nearby objects may appear blurry, and eye fatigue can increase.
It improves abnormalities in accommodation function by acting on the muscles that adjust the focus within the eye.
Usage
Typically, 2 to 3 drops are instilled 4 times a day. The dosage may be adjusted according to the symptoms.
Mechanism of Action
Neostigmine methyl sulfate improves accommodation function through the following actions:
Cholinesterase inhibition: It suppresses the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, prolonging its effects.
Promotion of ciliary muscle contraction: The action of acetylcholine promotes the contraction of the ciliary muscle (the muscle within the eye), helping to change the thickness of the lens for focusing.
Features
Rapid onset: The effects begin to manifest relatively quickly after instillation.
Improvement of accommodation function: It may become easier to see nearby objects and reduce eye fatigue.
Pupil constriction action: It has the effect of making the pupil smaller, which may reduce sensitivity to bright light.
Precautions
Driving, etc.: Since the pupil becomes smaller, it may affect night vision. Caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery.
Use with other eye drops: If using other eye drops, please allow an interval of at least 5 minutes between applications.
Side effects: Rarely, headaches, nausea, or eye pain may occur.
