Primary Indications and Effects
This medication is used for the treatment of the following skin fungal infections:
1. Tinea (ringworm)
- Tinea pedis (athlete's foot)
- Tinea corporis (body ringworm)
- Tinea cruris (commonly referred to as "jock itch")
2. Cutaneous candidiasis
- Intertriginous candidiasis (inflammation between the fingers)
- Intertrigo (rash in skin folds)
- Infantile infectious erythrasma
3. Pityriasis Versicolor
- Light-colored spots that appear mainly on the upper body
4. Seborrheic Dermatitis
- An inflammatory skin condition that occurs on the scalp and face
Mechanism of Action
Ketoconazole works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a principal component of fungal cell membranes, thereby suppressing fungal proliferation. It is also effective against Malassezia yeast, which is a cause of seborrheic dermatitis.
Dosage and Administration
1. For tinea, cutaneous candidiasis, and pityriasis versicolor
- Apply on the affected area once a day.
2. For seborrheic dermatitis
- Apply on the affected area twice a day.
